For me, it was very important that I understood what was happening to my body during pregnancy & childbirth. I took a series of Childbirth Classes with my midwife, Shannon who is a childbirth educator. I did plenty of research on my own as well, so enjoyed classes with questions and comments.

Generally my midwives don't cut the umbilical cord until it stops pulsating; when the placenta is no longer sending the blood filled with nutrients and oxygen through the cord to the baby.
The Dangers of Early Clamping of the Umbilical Cord

For most doctors, it has become routine to cut the cord immediately after birth, thus depleting the baby of oxygen rich blood filled with nutrients.
